I'm going to give you the run-down on the newest calligraphy frontier: Snapchat geofilters!
Hey friends! Cristina Leis Calligraphy here, and I'm going to give you the run-down on the newest calligraphy frontier: Snapchat geofilters!
I know what you're thinking.
"What makes this random girl qualified to talk about creating geofilters?" And here's your answer: absolutely nothing!
Nothing makes me any different from you, dear reader.
I'm a 24-year-old living in Jackson, Mississippi, and my background isn't even in graphic design or art (I know I know, I'm an imposter!).
I graduated from the University of Mississippi with a Bachelor's degree in Biology and minors in Spanish and Chemistry.
Basically, I'm a huge nerd who stumbled upon calligraphy in my pre-med hiatus, and I couldn't be more thankful for that.
So if I, nerd of the century, can make a geofilter, then you can too!
Here's what you need:
1. Adobe Illustrator
2. Internet access to Snapchat website
3. Patience!! Seriously though, Snapchat is picky about what geofilters they allow. I had submitted two previous designs that were rejected before my third design was accepted (third time IS the charm! Who knew!)
1. Adobe Illustrator
a. Open up Illustrator and go to File -> New…where you will be prompted to create a new artboard. Alter the settings to the right as such: Width = 1080, Height = 1920, unit as pixels, and portrait orientation. Don’t worry about bleed. Once your settings are ready, click the blue button that says “create”.
b. You now have an artboard! Yay! Go to File -> Place… and grab your preferred digitized design. My design has white elements, so for the sake of this example, I’ve inserted this temporary black background to better show my design.
c. Once your geofilter is as you like, go to File -> Export -> Save for Web (Legacy)… In the window that pops up, go to the upper right dropdown box and choose PNG-24. You’re ready to save!
2. Snapchat Website
a. The website is very straightforward. Choose either “Community” or “On Demand” and input your information and location. My geofilter was for my city, Jackson, so it is categorized as Community. That’s it! Once you’ve submitted, you sit back and wait for an e-mail from Snapchat.
3. Like I mentioned above, Snapchat is picky about their Community geofilters. On-Demand ones are easier because you’re paying, and let’s be honest, Snapchat isn’t going to turn away free money! Don’t be discouraged if your design is not accepted. Keep at it, and your hard work will certainly pay off! In the meantime, shoot me a message through Instagram at cristina_leis or tag me in your geofilter Instagrams! I cannot wait to see what you creatives come up with!
A special thank you to the sweet-as-can-be Brooke Holden, whom I followed on Instagram for months before we became actual Insta-friends!
