1. Jumping into letters without mastering stroke formation
Calligraphy is not an extension of handwriting. Calligraphy is a discipline. The art of calligraphy is methodical and intentional. Stroke formation is the foundation of mastering calligraphy.
2. Learning calligraphy in a traditional alphabet fashion (ABC)
After stroke formation comes letter formation. Letter formation is an extension of stroke formation. Learn new hands by studying groups of similar letters. Understand the basic strokes of each letter make up their skeletons.
Practicing the calligraphy alphabet is the most effective way to learn calligraphy.
3. Attending one calligraphy workshop is enough
Calligraphy masters know practice makes progress and consistently study and practice drills to improve.
One workshop will not equip calligraphy beginners with more than the basic foundations of the art.
To be successful at calligraphy, one must study form and practice drills.
4. Holding the pen incorrectly
Hold the pen like a normal pen, but line the inside of your thumbnail with the gripper. That's the trick. Don't overthink it! Lefties may favor an oblique holder.
5. Thinking calligraphy is too difficult to master
Beginners can be intimidated by the beauty of flourishes and embellishments provided by calligraphy. It's important to remember those embellishment strokes were likely made by someone who studied and practiced calligraphy strokes a lot. Don't be intimidated. Study! Study! Study!
6. Neglecting to study letters
Study every stroke, letter and flourish. Calligraphy is methodical and studying is the best-kept secret to mastering the art.
